Hastings in top 10 for seaside house-price rises

Hastings has been ranked in a top 10 of seaside towns with the largest annual house-price rises. According to property website Zoopla, the average property price in the town has risen 6.95 per cent to £244,955 in the last year.

For Hastings, a likely factor in the price rise is the reopening of the town’s pier. After a fire destroyed 95 per cent of its superstructure in 2010, Hastings was left without a functioning pier for over half a decade.

The rebuilt pier opened in April 2016 with a sell-out concert by the band Madness and has gone from strength to strength with further music gigs, open-air film screenings and its restaurant, ice cream and fish-and-chip outlets drawing visitors to the town.

Another boon for Hastings is the opening of the Source Park, said to be the largest subterranean skate park in the world. This seafront-based enterprise, which cost £1.2 million and created 30 jobs, has been drawing BMX enthusiasts, skaters and skateboarders to Hastings from across the country since February.

And the town’s regeneration doesn’t stop there. There’s also the prospect of a new high-speed train station being built in Hastings, which would cut journey times to and from London by connecting with the Ashford-to-London service. If the plan comes to fruition, Hastings is likely to attract more home-buyers from London than ever.

Gaby Hardwicke Private Client Services Partner, Christopher Bean, commented: “There is a real vibrancy to the property market in Hastings. We are seeing both our local clients moving regularly within the town as well as those moving to the coast for the first time, or in some cases returning to a childhood home. All are drawn by differing things but what they find is a town that is clearly ‘on the way up’.”
