A Hastings landlord has been fined £5,250 with £682 costs for failing to comply with licence conditions for a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).
The woman pleaded guilty to seven offences that breached the terms of her HMO licence for a property in Cornwallis Terrace.
The offences included:
- Failing to provide a protected means of escape from the building.
- Failing to maintain and test the emergency lighting system.
- Failing to provide an interlinked fire alarm system.
- Failing to maintain and keep the common areas of the property in good repair.
Councillor Kim Forward told the Hastings Observer: “The council has a duty to protect tenants from rogue landlords and the licensing controls set agreed standards that should always be met by landlords.
“We take these issues very seriously indeed and the council will continue to seek out unlicensed properties and prosecute owners who ignore requests to licence their properties.”
